Moor House employs an extensive and highly specialist team of onsite SLTs who each carry a small caseload of up to 12 students for the entire academic year. SLTs work with students intensively in individual sessions and small groups targeting specific areas of language and communication needs. The SLTs work directly in the classroom where lessons such as English and Science are jointly planned and delivered with specialist Teachers with experience in working with students with language impairment.

The intervention that is provided is continually evaluated in terms of effectiveness and the SLT Team shares findings nationally. We provide intensive intervention using highly specialist speech and language systems embedded throughout the curriculum such as SHAPE CODING™, signing with grammatical markers and Cued Articulation. As well as having specialism in language development and intervention, our speech and language therapists have expertise in speech sound disorders which often co-occur with language difficulty.

We have a specialist therapeutic centre dedicated to students with severe speech sound disorders where they can use highly specialist equipment including Electropalatography (EPG).

Our students make outstanding progress on standardised speech and language assessments during their years at Moor House which narrows the gap between them and their typically developing peer group.

We have excellent links with Universities both in terms of supporting those training to become therapists and in carrying out joint research projects to ensure our students make the best progress.

Our therapeutic approaches are recognised internationally. We are frequently invited to share our knowledge and our Research Institute ensures our speech and language therapy methodology for children with language disorders remains at the forefront.

Physiotherapy

We have a Physiotherapist who works directly with students who have identified physiotherapy needs as part of our multi-disciplinary team.

Psychotherapy

We recognise that students with language disorders are more likely to have needs related to their emotional well-being. Our full time Child Psychotherapist is onsite and provides direct individual sessions for students. The Psychotherapist leads the multidisciplinary team in providing support for students’ well-being across the school.

All staff are trained to be able to identify and support students using an embedded school wide approach.

This supports our pupils’ emotional and social development so that they are ready to learn and feel valued, involved and appreciated.

Moor House DLD Clinical Excellence Network

Moor House hosts the regional DLD Clinical Excellence Network (CEN). Membership is open to all health and education professionals with an interest in developmental speech, language and communication disorders.
