Developing Life Skills books on sale
A series of books on developing life skills has been launched forming an essential guide for teaching and learning support staff working with young people with language disorders.
Written by Specialist Occupational Therapists Debbie Burridge, Martha Ni Fhlatharta and Sarah Crawley at the Moor House Research and Training Institute, part of Moor House School and College, they bring together theory and practice with simple but effective strategies for non-specialist staff to support young people with language disorders in learning essential life skills.
Each book is focused on one of the eight life skill areas included in the WHEEL OF INDEPENDENCE™ Framework, which are: money skills, housekeeping, self-care, leisure, meal preparation, time management, laundry and food shopping.
The books are a great aide to assist with the development of life skills. These books link with an online tool for tracking progress in the eight life skills areas.
Each book provides a step-by-step, easy to follow formula that will give you the tools and confidence you need to identify the barriers to a young person’s ability to develop their life skills.
Author Debbie Burridge said: “The WHEEL OF INDEPENDENCE™ Framework helps young people to gain independence and increase social participation by breaking down life skills development into achievable goals, whilst allowing you to track progress and identify next steps.
“Our developing skills resource books are intended to help non-specialist learning, support and teaching staff to improve the life skills of children and young people with language disorders.”
Developed at Moor House, a specialist school and college for children and young people with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD), the online tool and books are most suitable for use with teenagers (aged 14+) and young adults who have the potential to live an independent or semi-independent life.
