 RAVE O Programme

The RAVE-O Programme
A Comprehensive, Fluency-Based Reading Intervention Programmme

Two-Day Course
August 29 - 30, 2008

MHS school is proud to host the first UK based RAVE-O training course on the 29th and 30th August 2008!

RAVE-O is the first comprehensive research and evidence-based approach to reading fluency in the literature: that is, one that addresses both overt reading behaviours like word recognition skills and comprehension, and underlying components including visual scanning, orthographic pattern recognition, semantic and syntactic development and lexical retrieval. RAVE-O simultaneously addresses the need for automaticity in phonological, orthographic, semantic, syntactic and morphological systems as well as the importance of teaching explicit connections among these systems. The goal throughout is to teach systematic, theoretical principles that underlie fluency and decoding through:

  • explicit instruction in skills underlying fluency and comprehension
  • imaginative, whimsy-filled opportunities for practice
  • a set of strategies that embolden discouraged children to look at written language with whole new eyes

The Rave-O Curriculum and Materials includes:

  • Manual with detailed activities for a minimum of sixteen (16) weeks, seventy (70) sessions
  • Instructional kit of manipulatable materials
  • Binder of reproducible materials
  • Set of Minute Stories for each week
  • Computer program for individual practice

Training for Instruction Programme

The 12- hour professional development course, distributed over two full days, prepares professionals to implement the curriculum immediately. Professionals will learn:

  • a new conceptualization of reading disorders supported by 25 years of locally and federally supported research by Dr. Maryanne Wolf and the Center for Reading and Language Research
  • a developmental and multi-component-based intervention for reading fluency and comprehension
  • methods and materials of the RAVE-O curriculum to increase accuracy and processing speed in underlying components of reading
  • instructional strategies for putting the RAVE-O curriculum into practice in classroom and tutorial settings through demonstration lessons
  • considerations for the integration of RAVE-O and other phonological-based programs
