Year 10 and 11 History Students interview World War Two Veteran

On Wednesday 8th November, all the students who study History at KS4 with Ms Carroll, Miss Brady and Mr Carroll took part in a number of activities to commemorate Armistice Week.

The first activity included a visit to the Oxted War Memorial. Here the students recorded the names of all those who had died in World War One in order to use a range of resources including the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website to investigate what happened to these men during the war. The students then laid a wreath at the memorial on behalf of all the students and staff at Moor House School.

This was followed by an opportunity to interview Commander Josh Cosnett at the Royal British Legion in Oxted. Commander Cosnett joined the navy at sixteen during the last year of World War Two and served in the Far East and the Pacific. After the war he continued to serve for a further twenty-five years and was able to talk to the students in great detail about his war and military experiences.

Afterwards the students were able to ask Commander Cosnett questions which included subjects such as his reasons for joining the navy, the similarities and differences between World War Two and conflicts around the world today, his thoughts about atomic warfare and when he had learnt about the concentration camps.

The students and staff would like to thank Commander Cosnett for a fascinating interview and the staff at the Royal British Legion for making us all so welcome.

Year 11 History 'Boys and Girls' meet 'The History Boys'.

On Tuesday 7th November, Year 11 students with Miss Brady, Mr Heine and Ms Carroll went off to Reigate Cinema to watch the recently released 'The History Boys'. None of us really knew what to expect, although there was some fear that it might be worse than a double lesson of history with Ms Carroll!! It was hoped that the film would provide some inspiration as the Year 11 students begin to prepare for their final examinations this year. For those not familiar, the film followed a group of sixth form pupils preparing for the Oxbridge examination and interview.

The film proved to be a big hit with students and staff. It raised lots of questions about the meaning and purpose not just of studying history, but of all the knowledge we acquire during our school days. One Year 11 student also commented that it showed the importance of making learning fun! The film ended with a leap forward of ten years to where the characters were in their adults lives after school and university which proved to be another pertinent moment as our Year 11 students are currently making plans for their future after Moor House School.

Rating: A film to make you think.
