Surrey Skills Festival 2008
On Thursday 31st January, all Year 9 pupils, together with key staff, went to Sandown Park Racecourse, Esher. Their mission was not to 'clean up' on the horses, but to take part in the Surrey Skills Festival. With over 100 exhibits, this represents the biggest interactive skills event ever to be held in the county.
It meant that the students could discover a huge range of career and study options by talking to real people doing real jobs. They also had the opportunity to try their hand at new skills with very many interactive exhibits.
The visit perfectly complemented the work on careers and subject options that the students had been doing in P.S.H.E/Life Skills back at school. They could get information on careers from expert advisers.
The pupils gained a great deal from their experiences and impressed with their willingness to find out as much as they could and to get involved in a wide variety of activities, (from bricklaying to hairdressing).
We were joined at the venue by a representative from our local Connexions
and our grateful thanks go to Jo Baxter for organising an event which has become a firm fixture in the school calendar.
