SHE STOOPS TO CONQUER - by Dr. Oliver Goldsmith April 1st
Yvonne Arnauld Theatre Guilford - Year 11 Entry Level Drama Students

It was with some apprehension that I decided to take these  students to what is a wordy, lengthy and at times, complicated play.  But, I need not have worried!  The students had been well briefed in class about the period and significant history of this Comedy of Manners, and by the time we had walked along the canal to the theatre with the narrow boats moored up, they were very excited.

I was delighted that throughout the entire 3 hours of performance, they were engrossed, and understood  all the twists and turns.  The production highlighted both the raucous and the bawdy, and the exaggerated style of this genre with its satirical undertones was utterly comprehensible.  They laughed a huge amount, and all said they had loved every minute.   This has been a wonderful introduction to period drama, and a boost to their morale prior to their exam in April.
